There is a map inside you.

It follows the same routes as water. It moves through the same territories — highland to lowland, stream to river, river to estuary, estuary to sea. It filters and flows and finds its way, slowly, inexorably, toward something larger than itself.

You have felt this. Perhaps you did't have words for it. But you have stood somewhere — at the edge of water, or in the early morning before the day's demands began — and felt something in you settle. A sigh, as something aligns. The particular quiet of a body, for a moment, remembers it's essence.

This is the healing the Chesapeake Bay Watershed has been teaching me for fifty years.

I began near the source.

In the mountains of West Virginia, where the Appalachian highlands gather the first trickle of water and send it eastward toward the sea — that is where I first put brush to canvas. Where I first learned to look at land and sky and water and feel something move in me that I didn't yet have words for.

The mountains taught me to feel. Not to represent how a place looks, but to paint how it feels — how it feels to be there, to be here, on this earth, right now. The light on highland meadows not as observation but as sensation. The silence of a stream not as subject but as experience moving through the body of the painter standing beside it.

From there I followed the water east.

The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is the largest estuary in North America — six states and Washington, DC, held in one vast, breathing network of water. Appalachian highlands trickling into woodland streams. Streams filtering into ponds and brackish marshlands. Marsh opening into rivers, rivers into bays, and into the vast oceans.

Every drop of water on a journey of becoming — moving through the land the way healing seeps through a body. Not in a straight line, not all at once, but steadily, gently seeping, finding its way through every pore.

I have painted within this watershed for fifty years.

But it was the pond beside my studio — these last thirty years — that completed the understanding.

On this pond, fed by two woodland streams filtering down through the woods, the landscape began speaking to me through its own whimsical language. I discovered the pond within me. I began stitching dream and painting symbols together with the stuff of daily life. And in my quirky dream-painting-journaling process, I filtered my way through all the woulds! The titles of paintings, years past and present, took on a kind of narrative journey of the creative heart. And as she heals, a peaceful iridescent presence emerges.

The aquifer.

As I painted, I felt the aquifer flowing through me from highland through mountains and valleys, dissolving the grit of life. Brush stroke by brush stroke, the undulating flow emerged on canvas. Marshy ground beneath my feet gave way — to a confluence of salt and fresh water, as I allowed myself to float.

Downstream, no longer paddling upstream, I gave in to the creative heart — and allowed myself to be carried in the flow. I understood then, that this is what we are all carrying.

Each of us holds an aquifer within — a vast, unseen reserve of resource, of wisdom, of creative and healing capacity that has no bottom and no boundary. It is not something we must build or earn or become worthy of. It is already there. It has always been there. It is the deepest truth of what we are.

And yet.

Doubt stands in the way. Disbelief. The quiet, persistent conviction that we are somehow the exception — that others may have this depth within them, but we do not. That the well inside us is dry, or too small, or not worth trusting. This is the only thing standing between any human being and the resource they have been seeking their whole lives.

Not lack. Not limitation. Just the failure to believe in what is already there.

This is what this body of work is about.

What began as landscape painting — a painter in the mountains, learning to see — became, over fifty years of following the water from source to sea, something else entirely. A journey inward. A transformation from an artist who painted the landscape out there to one who paints the landscape within.

The healing process made visible — the slow, steady movement from doubt toward knowing, from surface toward depth, from the trickle at the highland source to the vast, open confluence with the sea.

Every painting in this collection is a record of that journey. And an invitation into yours.

As the oyster filters the flow of the largest estuary in North America, so we filter what moves through us — and in that filtering, we reveal the pearl within. The pearl was never absent. It was forming in the dark, in the quiet, in the place doubt said was empty.

When you live with these works, something of that knowing moves into you.

Not metaphorically. Actually.

Colour is frequency. The earth tones and luminous skies and deep, still waters carry a resonance that's been painted from embodiment — from fifty years of a woman following the water and learning, finally, to trust what lies beneath. That frequency is present in the work. It is available to you.

As you embody earth, sky, and water — as you let these landscapes become part of the air of your home, part of what your eyes rest on in the quiet hours — you begin to sense your own aquifer. The vast, unseen reserve that has been there all along. Waiting not to be created, but simply to be believed in.
