The first ponds I painted were wild. At the edge of fields and meadows, they felt like a private discovery. Many were simply the accumulation of water in a low spot, not runoff, not an official pond — a place between woodland streams and marsh lands where I felt drawn to a clearing.
Several spots I frequented in Southampton county, nameless places off the side of a narrow road, I still picture in my mind's eye as special. I felt something comforting there, a kind of quiet, hidden away from time. I painted light glowing through the treetops, leaves floating on the surface of water, shimmering for a few radiant moments. I longed to keep it.
Years later when we moved to Mathews county, where a much larger pond occupies part of the property. Tentatively, I exhibited a few paintings at an exhibition in Northern Virginia -- one of which was an oil painting I'd painted the prior decades in Southampton. Incredibly, the painting looked exactly like the property we'd just purchased.
And when I exhibited it for the first time, a woman came in on opening night and told me a story about the painting, what she felt in it. I knew then that the painting was hers all along. I'd been the channel for something precious something sacred.
