I'd wondered why I felt so drawn to water. Suddenly I felt seen. My perspective shifted.
A painting I destroyed, returned decades later, to open the watershed within me. In an array of flaming reds, vermillions, and deep blues, Oyster & Pearl, a sunset painting of two oystermen knee-deep in the marshy creek, rake through the muddy river bottom in search of oysters embedded right underfoot.
Water charts its own journey — source to congruence with the sea. It takes the path of least resistance, seeking every pore, crack and crevice to form streams, rivers, and estuaries where salt and fresh water create a great confluence.
Perhaps we're here to do the same; filter the grit of life, chart our own journey through every pore, crack, and crevice to form estuaries in a great confluence with nature. Pearlescence emerges from within.
Beginning near the source in the 1980s, I painted in the mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. I hiked, and camped, and painted, from trickling creeks embedded with sea fossils to gushing waterfalls.
Decades pass as I use my art to heal. Trauma isolated me from fellow contemporary artists and I found sanctuary painting a narrow strip of sand between earth and sky.
The pond beside my studio became a reflection, mirroring life back to me. Journaling dreams, justaposed with paintings, and my woodland pond, I planted a meadow garden to cultivate my heartland.
I feel my pond as a vortex of energies coverging within me. My heartland meadow grows more vibrant within — than the drought-stressed one outside my window. It's time to share the Watershed's Legacy of Healing, Resilience, and Regeneration.
My style evolves, and my creative heart rises boyant. In paintings, imagery and brush strokes undulate together, floating like dreams, no longer anchored to low horizons. Large scale textiles emerge, translating into fabrics I'd envisioned as a girl.
Wherever you are on your journey — a woman in the mountains, following emotional currents, flexing faith — beside you on your pathway, a crone seer channels pearls of wisdom from the Watershed.
