Interpreting The Watershed

After a decade painting marshlands, ponds, and creeks in Mathews county, I felt a sense of the aquifer. I felt curious a sensation and wanted a way to explore, visualize, hold the entire ecosystem in one painting.

I'd painted an oversize work titled Etude the previous year, I'd envisioned it embracing us in the dining room, not intruding, demanding to be seen. Rather embracing the space with a quiet tranquility. A step further, I envisioned Aquifer as a triptych mural, embracing the entire watershed. At the top a ribbon of sky, heartland meadows bridging the ridgeline and the flowing river. This year two new Aquifer paintings emerged without a plan, from an immersion of interwoven meadow landscapes.
