In the 1980s I was on my knees beside streams and creeks throughout the highlands of Virginia and West Virginia, painting plein air, mostly in pastel on earth-toned paper. The paper itself was part of the intention — grounding the flow with the earth before a single mark was made.
Something dramatic had shifted. The day after the assault in my studio I could no longer paint the gentle abstract outlined landscapes on soft white printmaking paper I'd painted the day before. Instead, I painted on gritty earth-tone sandpaper with raging colors and slashing angular strokes.
My sense of safety and reality destroyed, I used my art to recreate what I'd lost. I stopped planning my paintings with outlines on clean white paper in the studio — and painted instead on earthy ochre, and gray green pastel papers — streams trickling through rocky terrains. My husband and sons accompanied me always holding a safe space for me.
